Sewing darts is a common technique used in garment construction to add shaping and contour to a flat piece of fabric. Darts are typically used at the bust, waist, or hips to give a garment a more fitted and flattering silhouette. While they may seem intimidating at first, darts are actually quite easy to sew once you get the hang of them. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to sew darts easily:
First, gather your materials. You will need a sewing machine, thread, fabric, scissors, a seam ripper (optional), and a tailor's chalk or fabric pen.
Begin by laying your fabric out flat on a table or work surface. Locate the dart markings on the pattern (these will typically be indicated by small triangles). Use the tailor's chalk or fabric pen to mark the dart points on the fabric.
Fold the fabric along the dart fold line, bringing the dart points together. Pin the fabric in place to hold it steady while sewing.
Thread your sewing machine with the appropriate color of thread for your fabric. Set your machine to a straight stitch and select a stitch length of about 2.5-3.0mm.
Begin sewing the dart by starting at the wide end of the dart (the end farthest from the dart point). Slowly and carefully sew towards the dart point, keeping your stitches straight and even. As you near the dart point, you may need to pivot the fabric to maintain a straight seam.
Once you reach the dart point, stop sewing with the needle down in the fabric. Lift the presser foot and pivot the fabric to continue sewing down the other side of the dart. Lower the presser foot and continue sewing until you reach the end of the dart.
Tie off the thread ends by sewing a few stitches in reverse, then cutting the threads close to the fabric.
Repeat the process on the other side of the dart if necessary.
Once both darts are sewn, press the darts flat with an iron. Be sure to use a low heat setting and a pressing cloth to protect your fabric.
If you are sewing a dart on a curved seam, such as at the bust or hips, you may need to ease the fabric in slightly to create a smooth, curved seam. To do this, simply gather the fabric slightly as you sew, using small, even tucks.
Sewing darts may seem intimidating at first, but with a little practice and patience, you'll be a pro in no time! Just remember to take your time and keep your stitches even and straight, and you'll be able to easily add shaping and contour to any garment. Happy sewing!
